Edwardian Garden in Bedford

This Edwardian garden in Bedford required renovation for the clients who were looking to have more planting to attract wildlife and for a softer feel to their outside spaces. The clients being keen on recycling and with a small budget, Susan found a compass feature hidden in the back garden border foliage and some of it behind the shed, with some other original house bricks in a corner and used these in the design.

Susan designed to remove a long large concrete edge and a strip of paving to widen the main border and sourced some more Edwardian house bricks. By widening the area outside the kitchen door with the lifted paving we were able to more easily accommodate all the wheelie bins and a new cover.

The compass was made into a feature outside the conservatory. Using all the original house bricks we edged all the paving giving a smarter appearance to the whole area. A magnificent and productive fig tree became the main feature of the garden planting, with other planting for shade including bluebells, snowdrops and butterfly plants in the sunnier spots. A few mature plants were retained and more added for height to semi screen the boundary view.

Lots of spring bulbs were added in the autumn including to the front garden which was briefed for lavender and softer colourful shrubs to greet the owners as they come in and out of the front door.
