Design, Planting

This old stone-walled courtyard garden is on the site of the previous village school playground. The owners needed a new garden to have a quiet, restful atmosphere for calm and relaxation; at the same time to reuse as many if their existing plants which had been rescued from their previous garden. The existing water feature had been built in a rush and was now considered ugly and had failed. There was insufficient area for plants and the garden didn’t feel right for the clients.
With the clients a simpler water feature was chosen. The use of the whole space was carefully reviewed and the new design was drawn to address the many activities required in the space available. Materials were selected to work with old walls, which had partially collapsed and had to be rebuilt before the new hard landscaping was installed. Plants to be reused were dug up and, with a new planting scheme, were grouped appropriately to their type and aspect in the space.

"Hi Susan, We are so lucky to get the pleasure, every day, of being in our beautiful garden, thanks to your expertise and flair. I suppose ‘handing over’ that responsibility for some is harder than others, but from the moment we met, you were so knowledgeable and you cared, I trusted that you would do your best and you certainly have delivered on all fronts."
"Our beautiful garden is a joy to wander through. A small courtyard space has been transformed from a thoroughfare to a place of tranquillity with lots of aspects where we can sit and watch our garden grow and mature. Susan listened to our needs and wants, our likes and hopes and together with her team, fulfilled our brief with enthusiasm and expertise, always professional and committed to her work. Thank you Susan for giving us our forever garden."
