Ruffs Furze Design

Design, Planting

New garden transformation with layered planting designed to mature beautifully, delivering colour, structure and interest throughout the year as the garden evolves.

This complete garden transformation focused on creating a space that was easy to enjoy and rewarding to live with, even for novice gardeners. Every detail was carefully discussed and considered, resulting in a layered planting scheme designed to grow and improve over time. As the plants establish, the garden is already sparking curiosity and daily enjoyment, with the promise of increasing colour and interest through every season. The finished garden offers both immediate impact and long-term pleasure as it continues to mature.

In 2020, Susan Young received two awards at the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Awards for her work on the Ruffs Furze project, recognising both the technical delivery and overall design quality of the scheme.

The project achieved Silver in the Hard Landscaping category (projects to a budget of £20,000), acknowledging the high standard of construction, material use, and finish delivered within a defined budget. The scheme demonstrated how careful planning and skilled execution can achieve strong visual and practical results while maintaining cost efficiency.

Ruffs Furze also received Bronze for Overall Design, recognising the project’s cohesive layout, balance of hard and soft landscaping elements, and successful response to the client brief.

These awards highlighted the strength of both the build quality and design thinking behind the Ruffs Furze project, reinforcing Susan Young’s ability to deliver well-executed landscape schemes across a range of project values.

“We are so pleased we chose Susan to completely transform our garden, she has discussed every small detail with us and nothing has been overlooked. We are not great gardeners but this has certainly sparked an interest for us both, I walk round the garden every morning just to see changes in the plants. This time next year I am sure it will be glorious when all the plants mature. Once the bulbs are planted later this year, we will have interest and colour all year in the garden.”
