Walled Garden Planting

Planting

Front garden redesign transforming a dark, weedy space into a bright, cheerful garden with new turf, colourful borders and grasses that neighbours admired.

Susan was asked to help redesign a couple’s front garden as they felt it was dark and gloomy. Susan attended the home and had a chat with the lady of the house and discovered that the couple wanted to keep the lawn, as her husband liked mowing!

The client had a preference for flowers in yellow and purple, but did not want daisies.

The project had some initial challenges in that:

  • The garden was full of weeds

  • The soil was yellow clay

  • The site was on a windy corner

  • The site was in full sun, however there was a boundary wall that provided some protection to the site

  • There was a sewer inspection cover right next to the entrance gate

Susan conducted a site survey to create a base plan, and a concept design was drawn up and agreed.

The project began by lifting the old lawn and completely replacing it with new turf. The borders were reshaped and replanted to be yellow, purple and lime green all year round. A planting feature of grasses was made to bring movement next to the gate.

The overall look of the garden was lively and cheerful and the owners loved it, mentioning the admiration from the neighbours, which led to Susan renovating the front garden of one neighbour, and the back garden of another!
